If you're a nature enthusiast and beer lover, there's no better combination than hiking on scenic trails and enjoying craft brews. Nestled in the picturesque town of Waynesboro, Virginia, Basic City Brewing Company offers not only exceptional beer and food but also convenient access to some remarkable hiking trails. One such trail that stands out is the Humpback Rocks Trail on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The Humpback Rocks Trail
The Humpback Rocks Trail is a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts seeking breathtaking views and a challenging hike. Spanning a distance of approximately 2.5 miles, this trail boasts a variety of natural wonders, making it a popular choice among both locals and tourists. While there are countless trails that connect with the Appalachian Trail and connect with the Blue Ridge Parkway, this is a must-do trail for folks spending a little time in one of the Region's best gateway cities! Waynesboro has a lot to offer so while we're highlighting Basic City in this blog, be sure to make your rounds to some of the other local thirst quenchers!
Key Trail Highlights
As you embark on the Humpback Rocks Trail, prepare to be amazed by the following highlights:
Panoramic Views: The trail rewards hikers with sweeping panoramic views of the Shenandoah Valley and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. You'll be captivated by the stunning vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see.
Historical Significance: Humpback Rocks is not just a pretty sight, but it also holds historical significance. The rocks themselves were used by early European settlers as navigational landmarks and served as a crossing point on their journey westward.
Flora and Fauna: Along the trail, you'll encounter a diverse array of flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for wildflowers, songbirds, and even the occasional glimpse of wildlife such as deer or black bears. Remember to observe them from a safe distance and marvel at the wonders of nature. Seriously though, there are bears in the area so don't be an idiot. There's often a trail ambassador sharing excellent bear safety info, it's worth a listen if you have a moment.
Pro Tip: During peak summer months and during fall foliage madness, get to the trailhead EARLY! The main parking lot fills up fast, and although there is additional parking along the roadside I recommend getting up the trail early and working back down before the lunch crowd hits the mountain. This puts you in a great position to enjoy a frosty beverage over a nice lunch in town. And definitely bring the camera, there are some great views from the peak!
Difficulty Level: It's important to note that the Humpback Rocks Trail is considered moderately difficult, making it suitable for those with a moderate level of fitness. The trail features some steep sections and uneven terrain, providing a satisfying challenge for hikers seeking a more adventurous experience. It's recommended to wear sturdy hiking footwear and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout your journey. The trail is very narrow at points and on busier days it might be difficult to make progress. Be prepared for very slick conditions if there have been recent rains.
Beers at Base Camp: Basic City Brewing Company
After an exhilarating hike on the Humpback Rocks Trail, what better way to reward yourself than with refreshing craft beer and delectable food at Basic City Brewing Company? Located just a short distance from the trailhead, this vibrant brewery and taproom is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.
Current Offerings: At Basic City Brewing Company, you'll find a wide selection of handcrafted brews to suit every palate. From hoppy IPAs to smooth stouts and everything in between, their rotating lineup of beers promises something new and exciting with each visit. Be sure to check out their website for the latest offerings and seasonal favorites. This place has a great vibe to it and is a welcoming location to folks all comers, whether you're in your Sunday Best or a with a little mud on the proverbial tires after a long day on the trail.
As you'll come to find in future posts, I've spent quite a bit of time kicking around New Zealand, also looking for great adventures and good beer. I think because of that I've been very drawn to Zealandia, a delicious IPA hopped with some of Aotearoa's (New Zealand) finest hops. It's darn refreshing after a steamy summer hike but they have some excellent stouts to recharge after a frigid trek up the mountain as well.
When it comes to food, Basic City Brewing Company doesn't disappoint. Their menu features a delicious array of dishes prepared with locally sourced ingredients. The one thing I cannot pass up though is the wood-fired pizza. The crew can kick out some incredible pizza's and they keep'em coming! If you want something a little more refined, check out their delicious charcuterie boards for you and your trail mates.
Don't forget to bring some extra quarters for some good ole fashioned ski ball, a little shuffleboard, or a very generous claw machine for the kiddos!
Cheers to trails explored and ales savored, keep on trekking!
